A Model for Understanding Eating Disorders

Dr Noctor is currently responsible for the design and implementation of the Eating Disorders Programme in St Patrick's Mental Health Service and has designed similar programmes both nationally and internationally in a variety of service settings. His ongoing clinical work involves individual and group psychotherapy with young people with eating disorders and his knowledge and experience in this area is widely sought.

Programme summary

The successful participant who completes this course will understand the definitions, causes and classifications of Eating Disorders. The participant will comprehend the basic psychological function of eating and food in our emotional lives and identify when this relationship between food, weight and shape becomes pathological. The strengths and limitations of the available treatment modalities will be discussed, paying particular attention to the psychodynamic aspects of eating disorders treatment

Programme aims

 

1. To provide registered nurses and midwives with up-to-date, evidenced based knowledge to critically develop nurses' theoretical and practical understanding of Eating Disorders

2. To support registered nurses and midwives in enhancing their confidence, skills and competences in treating Eating Disorders.

Learning outcomes

 

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the causes of Eating Disorders and their mechanism of development

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the existing theoretical understandings of Eating Disorders

3. Critically analyse the various approaches that are endorsed for the treatment of Eating Disorders.

4. Critically discuss the psychodynamic function of Eating Disorders in families

5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of effective approaches to Eating Disorders treatment
