Ms Hanora Byrne has worked in the area of Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health and Addiction) for over 10 years. She developed the position of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Addiction when she worked in the Central Mental Hospital. While working in this capacity she developed a pathway of care for acutely unwell patients.

In her capacity as a CNS she co-developed a 5-day training programme which she delivered to both Nurse and allied health professionals. Along with her patient work she has several journal and article publications and has presented her research nationally and internationally.

Programme summary

On completion of this course the successful participant will have a better understanding of the definition, classification and social implications of Dual Diagnosis of mental health and addiction. The participant will have gained confidence in discussing the treatment approached for patients/clients with a dual diagnosis.

Programme aims

 

1. To provide registered nurses with a better understanding of how substance misuse/abuse can exacerbate mental health and how Mental Health can increase the need for substance use.

2. To support registered nurses in enhancing their confidence, skills and competences, with regard to the treatment of patients who present with a Dual Diagnosis “Mental Health and Addiction”.

Learning outcomes

 

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the principles of motivational interviewing and the cycle of change

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the Term “Addiction” and the Dual Diagnosis “Mental Health and Addiction”

3. Critically discuss the implications of substance misuse/abuse on Mental Health and how Mental Health can impact on substance use

4. Demonstrate increased knowledge and confidence to address substance misuse in patients with a Dual Diagnosis “Mental Health and Addiction”
