Frailty and Mental Health in Older People

Clinical & Integrated Programmes at Health Service Executive and has extensive experience in both gerontology and mental health.

Caroline Clifford RPN, MSc (Dementia Care), PGDip (Mental Health of Older People) Dementia Champion.

Caroline is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry of Later Life.

Programme summary

This programme will provide participants with a critical understanding of frailty in the elderly in the mental health setting. Participants will explore the definition of frailty and critically explore both the causes of and management of the condition. This programme will increase participants understanding of dementia and responsive behaviours. It will also provide the nurse with an understanding of how to support frailty as it presents in later life, provide a management plan to support the individuals' care needs and to provide a person centred care plan for someone with dementia and responsive behaviours.

Programme aims

 

The aim of the programme is to provide nurses working in the mental health arena, with an enhanced understanding of frailty assessments, thereby ensuring earlier recognition of frailty, improved healthcare management, and better health outcomes for older adults, with mental health co-morbidities, living with frailty.

It also aims to support registered nurses in enhancing their confidence, skills and competences in caring for the physical and mental health of the frail older adult and increases awareness of dementia and responsive behaviours.

Learning outcomes

 

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the spectrum of frailty as a long term condition.

2. Develop a critical understanding of validated screening tools as they relate to frailty (e.g. frailty assessment, falls assessment, delirium assessment tools).

3. Critically discuss the benefit of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in planning appropriate health promotion and care pathways to enhance outcomes for older person living with frailty

4. Develop a critical understanding of the significance of frailty and the impact of a gerontological approach to care, and its application in the mental health arena

5. Develop a critical understanding of Responsive Behaviours in Dementia
