Medication Management and Injection Technique: Refresher Day

BSc (Hons) Diploma in Occupational Psychology, PG Diploma (Mental Health), MSc (Nursing)

Ciaran is currently working as ADON in the Phoenix Care Centre in Dublin. Previous to this he worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health and held this position for a 10 year period. He is a Registered Nurse Prescriber. Ciaran is an Honorary Teaching Associate in the RCSI where he delivers lectures to post graduate nursing and medical staff. Ciaran has been a psychiatric nurse since 1988 and has an excellent and practical awareness of dealing with issues surrounding medication management.

Programme summary

This CPD programme provides registered nurses and midwives with knowledge and a critical understanding of the key issues in medication management. The content will focus on the general principles and responsibilities around medication management, outline current NMBI and HIQA standards, the cycle of medication management, safety in medication management and also cover the key principles in intra muscular administration of medication.

Programme aims

 

  1. To provide registered nurses and midwives with up-to-date, evidenced based knowledge to critically develop nurses' theoretical and practical understanding of administering intra muscular injections.
  2. To support registered nurses and midwives in the area of parenteral administration of medication by teaching evidence based practice in the area.

Learning outcomes

 

At the end of this CPD programme, participants will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the standards expected of registered nurses and midwives in the area of medication management, underpinned by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA).
  2. Critically discuss the need for safety in medication management and critically analyse the factors influencing drug errors.
  3. Critically discuss the general principles and responsibilities of medication management, medication protocols and the cycle of medication management.
  4. Critically discuss the key principles of pharmacoeconomics and the relevance this issue has on the healthcare service.
  5. Critically discuss the key principles in the administration of Intra Muscular medication.
